Storytelling is a big buzz word these days. Everyone talks about it but no one ever implements it into their business activity. The reason for this minimal effort can be a number of items – lack of understanding, not knowing what type of story to tell, or even the inability of knowing how to tell the right story at the right time. I get it. Storytelling is highly subjective and has a strong creative slant but it is also incredibly effective.
I want to offer 3 specific storytelling styles that will work within your Rodan + Fields business. You can master one or mix and match all three. The choice is completely yours. My only request is that you try and experiment. That’s where the real growth happens and soon enough you’ll find the right story. And, once you do, the results will start to appear.
The Heroic Journey
This storytelling structure is the classic hero story. Think of Luke Skywalker or Frodo. Each person is given a challenge, they face obstacles along the way, and then eventually succeed.
Practical Application: When promoting your Rodan + Fields story this is a powerful angle to take when talking with friends and prospects. You’ll want to highlight your struggles where you were the underdog, but you persisted, and eventually came out stronger on the other side.
Tension and Discovery
This style is similar to the heroic journey but slightly different. In this case, it’s not so much the underdog storyline but how problems and challenges persist, and then a-ha or discovery moment happens. I’ll give you an example. Think of the movie, Jaws. You hear the haunting sound of the cello. You see the shark fin in the water. However, you don’t see the great white shark until the last 15 minutes of the film. That’s the genius of directors like Steven Spielberg and you can apply this same approach to your business.
Practical Application: Showcase all the limitations of other side businesses or traditional careers. Be sure to display all the obstacles they create – limited family time, locked salaries, small amounts of vacation, and more. Those are the problems. Now, highlight the awakening you had when you were introduced to Rodan + Fields. This is your discovery moment.
A Personal Story
We live in a world right now where transparency is everything. We get stalked on Facebook. Our high school friends track our career updates on LinkedIn. Your ex monitors your Instagram feed. We all want and crave transparency so it should be no different when thinking about how you share your own personal story. Don’t be afraid to simply be you and share more about yourself.
Practical Application: Your personal story can easily be heightened or given an extra dose of authority when someone introduces you. The tip to remember here is that authority is best served when it comes from an outside source so be sure to have someone introduce before you share your personal R+F story.
Storytelling is an absolutely amazing business tactic when used correctly. In addition, it has been proven to work so now is the time to implement it into how you sell and share your Rodan + Fields story.
